Storytime: Ganny’s Spice
Ganny’s Spice pop up sample label.
Product stories are a great addition to the tea sipping experience. Let’s sip together and talk about Ganny’s Spice, a new blend inspired by my mother and the women who came before her.
I love making new products inspired by life itself. Ganny’s Spice - a Rooibos Chai blend is a new & very popular favorite (as of just last weekend)! So what happened was…I was all out of some of my ingredients to make Chocolate Covered Roses (previously a fan favorite). I was too exhausted to pick up more and go and blend them…so I pondered…. what should I do? Now I know your first thought could be ‘laziness’ but I’m learning to listen to my body. It will never steer me wrong. Burnout will not be the key to my success.
I decided to use the ingredients I had to make something similar. And I thought mmmm yessss - a Rooibos Chai - a very common drink. I combined all of these robust and powerful spices I had with rooibos - a South African herb.
We learned much about this herb as a connection to our roots. It is also known as red bush tea, popular in Africa and the Carribean. It is an adaptogen (helping the body to adapt to external stressors overtime). It can help with food allergies, skin issues, grounding and even the reproductive system.
You see, it has many uses.
I see chai as the gumbo of tea. My family is from New Orleans, so we always want “some more gumbo” when we visit. My cousin used to mock us with our Alabama accents saying, “Grandma Mal, can I please have more gumbooo” LOL.
The first time I had chai, I fell in love with the spices, the different flavors within the spices, and the many ways you could pair them to make a soothing beverage with a bit of a kick if you so choose. I always choose. Warming and robust, it always feels like home.
It just so happened to be Mother’s Day and my mother moves beyond the idea of taking lemons and making lemonade. She’d probably take lemons and make orange juice. She makes life happen all around her, the Olivia Pope of my life and many others. Every day is a new opportunity to love, support, and live more authentically or connect to your center as she always says. My nephews & niece call my mom Ganny! Ganny is full of flavor and fun, yet very grounded. She’s supportive, loving, nurturing, yet keeps it real (like really real). Her essence teaches personal power. How will you own who you are today and frankly my dear, not give a damn (my dad’s favorite line from Gone with the Wind)?
Now to top that off, I thought about the women who raised her and who raised them. How blessed I am to be a part of such a powerful lineage of women. As I’m learning to own this personal power more authentically, it is only right to pay homage to these beautiful and profoundly revolutionary women. A mother’s love, a grandmother’s prayer, and a lineage of sovereignty has shaped me and the work I do. It has shaped the medicine I choose to create with a sense of home, centering community needs, peace of mind, heart centered joy and just a desire to be here now.
So when you sip Ganny’s Spice, I hope it brings you home.
Don’t be surprised if we have a new Legacy line coming soon…
